The Lore Project connects us beyond Brighton to a collective of Moroccan women artisans whose hand-knotted rug-making has been passed down through generations. Working directly with makers, using carbon-negative wool and paying fairly, The Lore Project asks us to consider whose hands made what we hold beautiful — and whether our choices honour them.
I began my project as an antidote to many years spent working in a fast-paced corporate creative setting. I yearned for meaning, authenticity, and connection. Two years ago, I was fortunate enough to be introduced to The Anou, a community project based in Fes that empowers artisans to sell their products without the need for middlemen. Over time, I have built strong relationships with the artisans there, sharing skills and learning about their crafts and techniques while staying in homes and workshops in the Middle Atlas of Morocco.
This relationship has laid the foundations for The Lore Project, which is driven by two key desires: firstly, to support these women and help keep their craft a viable way to make a living, enabling the continuation of cultural traditions such as hand-knotting; and secondly, to bring my clients into the creative space and offer them some of the joy I experience in creating, watching these designs come to life at the hands of the maker, and seeing a unique rug take shape in a custom palette and size.
My designs pull on my foundations working in the world of contemporary interiors and I feel strongly that creating and collaborating together is an effective counter to the overwhelm and isolation many of us experience today.
The wool used in these rugs comes from Morocco’s first carbon-neutral wool mill, creating something both luxurious and hardwearing that will last a lifetime.
