Meet Rebecca
Pluralistic Psychotherapist & Clinical Supervisor
Psychotherapy is all about human connection and a secure base where you can find the insights you’re seeking. I start from the belief that each individual is unique, and so no two people should have the same therapy. At the start of our work together, I will take time to explore with you what you would like your therapy to look and feel like. Depending upon your needs and preferences, I will draw upon a range of traditions, including Person Centred, Existential, Psychodynamic, and contemporary Cognitive and Behavioural approaches, as well as my training in mindfulness and creative practice. I keep the words of Carl Rogers, the founder of Person Centred Therapy, at the heart of my work: ‘…when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.’ No matter who you are or what you are bringing to therapy, I offer you warmth, compassion and acceptance.
I have a private practice based near Edinburgh, and am also an experienced counselling lecturer/tutor and group facilitator. Prior to my training as a therapist, I had a 20-year career in social research, social policy and community development, which has given me broad and valuable awareness of the social and cultural contexts which shape all of our lives. Creative writing and outdoor activity have been central in my own therapeutic journey, and these are elements which I will incorporate into our work together if you wish to explore them.
I work with individuals aged 18+ as well as couples and adult family relationships. I respect and value human diversity across all of its many forms, and am an LGBTQ+ ally.
What you can expect when you meet me:
In our first few sessions, I will take time to get to know you and help you feel comfortable with me. I will get to know your history and current circumstances, and together we will talk about what would be most helpful for you at the beginning stage. For example, at first you may find it helpful to focus on how to regulate overwhelming emotions. Or, you may be looking for space to talk freely, express yourself and tell your story. As our work goes on, I will support you to venture into the deeper self-exploration which will connect your past experiences with your present and future. While looking back for insight, we will also look forward to the changes that you hope to make in your life.
